Dive Mask Leaking? Seven Fixes That Actually Work
Why dive masks leak and how to stop it: fit problems, hair and beard interference, skirt damage, over-tightening and the strap mistakes to avoid.

A leaking mask turns a good swim into a frustrating one. The good news: most leaks trace back to a handful of causes, and nearly all of them are fixable in minutes.
1. The Mask Does Not Fit Your Face
The most common cause. Run the suction test from our mask fitting guide: with the strap off, inhale through your nose — the mask should hold on its own. If it slides off, no strap adjustment will ever fix it.
2. Hair Under the Skirt
Even a few strands break the seal. Push hair back before fitting, and consider a neoprene strap cover that keeps straps from pulling hair into the skirt.
3. Facial Hair
A mustache is the classic leak source. A thin coat of silicone grease on the mustache restores much of the seal — more tips in our beard and mask seal guide.

4. Over-Tightened Strap
Counter-intuitively, tightening the strap makes leaking worse: the skirt distorts and the seal folds. The strap should just hold the mask in place — the suction does the sealing.
5. Damaged or Aged Skirt
Cracks, nicks or a stiffened skirt stop sealing. Silicone skirts age slowly; cheaper PVC skirts stiffen in a season or two. Compare materials in our skirt materials guide.
6. Sand or Salt on the Sealing Surface
Rinse the skirt before wearing. One grain of sand on the sealing flange guarantees a slow leak down one cheek.
7. Lens or Frame Damage
A dropped mask can crack a lens edge or bend the frame subtly. If the mask passed the suction test before an impact and fails after, inspect the skirt seating all the way round under good light.
