Mask Skirt Materials Compared: Liquid Silicone, Food Grade Silicone and TPR

Dive mask skirt materials compared: liquid silicone, food grade silicone and TPR — comfort, sealing, aging, cost, and how to verify what a supplier actually molds.

The Skirt Does the Sealing — and the Comfort

The skirt is the soft flange between frame and face. It decides whether a mask seals on the first try, whether it feels soft after an hour in the water, and whether it stays clear instead of turning yellow. Material choice is the biggest cost difference between masks that look alike, so buyers should know exactly what they are paying for.

Liquid Silicone: The Premium Standard

Liquid injection silicone is softer, more elastic and more stable than solid silicone. It snaps back after being crushed in a bag, stays supple in cold water, takes brighter colors and carries no smell. It also accepts finer skirt geometries — thinner sealing edges that grip a wider range of faces. Cost is higher, which is why it appears on pro and rental-top-tier masks.

Solid Food Grade Silicone: The Workhorse

Compression-molded food grade silicone delivers most of the benefits at a lower price: safe odor-free contact, good elasticity, long life in sun and salt. For volume retail and mid-range rental programs it is the sensible default, and it is what most of our adult and kids masks use.

TPR and PVC: Entry Level Only

• Lowest cost, common on giveaway-grade and very entry-level sets.
• Stiffer feel against the face and slower to recover from packing.
• Ages faster: yellowing and hardening under UV and chlorine.
• Fine for pool toys; a compromise for serious snorkeling.

How to Verify What You Are Buying

Ask two questions: the exact compound (request the material declaration), and the mold series — a supplier with many skirt molds is fitting faces, not just filling a catalogue. Smell is a fast field test: cheap PVC/TPR smells chemical even after washing; silicone is odor-free.

One Factory, All Three Grades

ZHONG JIAN molds liquid silicone, food grade silicone and TPR skirts in-house, so a single order line can mix grades across a product range — liquid silicone for the flagship mask, food grade for volume SKUs. Browse masks or ask for material samples.
