Snorkel Comfort Details: Mouthpiece, Purge Valve and Flexible Tube
Snorkel comfort decoded: silicone vs liquid silicone mouthpieces, one-way purge valves, flexible tube sections and PC vs PVC tubes — the details buyers should specify.
Three Small Features Decide Long-Session Comfort
Snorkels look interchangeable until someone wears one for an hour. Then the mouthpiece bite, the water-clearing valve and the tube joint determine whether the user forgets the gear or keeps taking it out. Buyers who check these three details up front avoid most rental and retail complaints.
Mouthpiece: Silicone, and the Right Size
The mouthpiece should be food grade silicone — soft enough to not ache the jaw, firm enough to hold position without clenching. Liquid silicone versions go further: they hold shape without memory stress on the teeth and tolerate boiling for sanitation. A good mouthpiece also has a replaceable bite tab; heavy users chew through tabs long before the tube wears out.
Purge Valve: Clear Without Effort
• A one-way silicone valve at the bottom lets collected water drain when you exhale gently.
• Clears most residual water without a full blast blow-out — helpful for kids and casual users.
• Check the seat: a warped valve is the top cause of "mystery water" during a swim.
Flexible Tube Section: Fit Under a Chin, Pack in a Bag
A corrugated flex segment lets the mouthpiece drop away comfortably when not in use and lets the tube angle into the mouth instead of yanking at it. For travel sets it also shortens the packed size. The trade-off is a slightly higher breathing noise — negligible for surface snorkeling.
Tube Material: PC vs PVC
Polycarbonate tubes stay crystal clear and rigid; PVC tubes are cheaper and slightly softer in cold water. Both work — but transparency quality and UV stability differ by compound, which is why we tube-mold in-house and offer both options per program.
