Snorkeling Entries: Beach, Boat and Rocky Shore Techniques
How to enter the water safely with mask, snorkel and fins: beach duck-dives, boat back-rolls and rocky shore shuffles, with exit tips too.

Entries and exits are where snorkelers scrape feet, drop fins and lose masks. A few standard techniques make every start and finish of the session calm and controlled.
Beach Entries: The Duck and Shuffle
Walk backwards into the water until thigh-deep, fins on but with short steps. For sandy bottoms, put fins on in chest-deep water and swim. Where small waves break, duck under them rather than fighting through, and keep the mask on your face with the strap snug — a wave takes loose masks instantly.

Boat Entries: Back-Roll and Giant Stride
From low RIBs and dive ladders, the seated back-roll keeps you compact and protects the mask from impact. From platforms, the giant stride — one long step, fins over the edge, mask held — works in water deeper than standing height. Always look below before entering and keep the snorkel in your mouth only if it has a reliable dry top; otherwise clear it on arrival, as covered in our snorkel valve comparison.
Rocky Shores: The Shuffle
Rocky entries deserve respect: wear boots with open heel fins if the shore is sharp, enter where the algae is thinnest, and move sideways with low steps. Surged rocks cause most snorkeling cuts — watch the water rhythm for three sets of waves before committing.

Exits: Plan Before You Swim
Identify your exit before entering and check it changes with the tide. Remove fins in waist-deep water and walk out backwards on sandy exits. On boats, pass fins and mask up separately rather than climbing with gear in hand.
