Mask Defog Methods Compared: Spit, Gel and Baby Shampoo
Defog methods tested: commercial gels, baby shampoo, spit and toothpaste — what works, what irritates eyes and what damages lens coatings.

Fogging is not a mask defect — it is warm, moist air meeting a lens that water cannot wet evenly. Every defog method works the same way: it leaves a surfactant film so condensation forms a clear sheet instead of droplets. The methods differ in cost, comfort and reliability.
Commercial Defog Gel
Reliable, eye-safe and travels well in a mask box. One drop per lens, a light rub, a quick rinse. The cost per session is higher than home methods, but it is the standard for dive centers running all-day trips.
Baby Shampoo
The diver favorite. A drop on each lens the night before, rinsed briefly in the morning, stays effective all day and stings far less than washing-up liquid. Cheap and widely available at any destination.

Spit
Always available, works reasonably, and costs nothing. Rub a thin film on the lens, rinse briefly — too much rinsing removes the film. The main downsides are hygiene in shared gear and reduced effect on very cold water.
Toothpaste: Use With Care
Mild white toothpaste can clean new masks thoroughly, but whitening and abrasive formulas micro-scratch lenses and can damage anti-fog coatings. If you use it at all, use it once for initial degreasing, then switch to gentler methods. New masks arrive with factory release agent on the glass — that first clean is essential, as explained in our gear care guide.
Match the Method to the Mask
Tempered glass lenses tolerate everything above; some coated lenses specify gel-only. Full face masks with integrated visors are especially sensitive to abrasives — follow the manufacturer's instructions, and see our full face mask safety guide.
