Diving with Sea Lions: Behavior, Etiquette and Gear
Sea lions are the playful puppies of the sea. Learn how to dive responsibly with them, where to meet them, and what gear to bring.

Sea lions are the extroverts of the underwater world. Curious, fast and famously playful, they seek out divers - circling, blowing bubbles and inviting games of tag. Watch a sea lion decide you are interesting and it is hard not to smile through your regulator. They are also wild animals and protected by law in most of their range, so meeting them well takes a bit of know-how.
Where divers meet sea lions
Two destinations dominate. The Galapagos Islands have resident sea lions that treat divers as playmates, especially around Isabela, Santa Cruz and Fernandina. In Mexico, the Sea of Cortez and Los Islotes rookery near La Paz offer famously friendly encounters in warm, calm water. Australia and New Zealand also host colonies where the right operator can arrange respectful in-water visits.
How they behave
Sea lions are intelligent and social. In the water they use their front flippers like wings and can turn on a coin - a sea lion at speed is one of the ocean's great sights. Pups often approach divers first; adults watch for a while and then join. Their curiosity is genuine, but so is their strength, and they deserve space and calm.
Etiquette that keeps encounters good
Invite, don't chase. Hold still, stay neutral in the water and let them choose the distance. Never corner a sea lion against the surface, the shore or a rock. Keep hands to yourself - touching is illegal in most destinations and spoils the encounter for the divers behind you. On land, stay behind the marked lines and give mothers with pups a wide berth.
Gear for sea lion dives
These are usually photo dives, and photo dives reward gear that disappears: a snug, leak-free mask you adjust once and forget, a snorkel clipped tight or left on the boat, and fins that are precise at low speed rather than stiff. Sea lions move fast and close - a wide-view mask helps you keep them in frame without swinging your head, and a keeper strap is cheap insurance if one decides your mask looks like a toy.
ZHONGJIAN manufactures dive masks, full face snorkel masks, snorkels and fins designed for warm-water wildlife encounters. Tour operators and suppliers can request specifications at ferrytk898@gmail.com.
