Top Snorkeling Destinations: Similan Islands and the Great Barrier Reef

Two world-class destinations define the snorkeling bucket list - here is when to go, what you will see, and the gear that fits each trip.

Ask experienced snorkelers where to point their fins and two names come up again and again. One is a group of nine islands in the Andaman Sea; the other is the largest reef system on the planet. Both reward travelers who plan around the seasons - and carry gear matched to the water.

Similan Islands, Thailand: January to April

The Similan Islands sit in the Andaman Sea northwest of Phuket, about an hour and a half by boat, and consist of nine islands. Because the national park operates on restricted opening hours, the island scenery stays remarkably pristine. The water shifts through layers of turquoise, and much of the marine life can be seen from the surface - the islands are known as a coral garden, and floating above the reef is often enough for a full day.
The recommended season runs from January to April. January and February are the best window for meeting whale sharks, the gentle giants that draw divers from around the world. Later in the season, the water stays clear for snorkelers who prefer to stay on the surface. Colorful coral colonies and dense schools of reef fish appear at every stop.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia: May to October

A World Heritage site and the largest living structure on Earth, the Great Barrier Reef combines over 2,900 individual coral reefs into an ecosystem that has to be seen to be believed. The stable climate between May and October keeps the water clear and the sunlight strong, which brings out the full color of the coral and its residents.
Three classic stops structure a reef trip: Hastings Reef, a typical outer reef about 20 metres deep with colorful sand at the top and a cave-like section below 5 metres; Axon Reef, where large staghorn corals and giant clams cluster along the reef edge; and Norman Reef, with its floating platform, underwater observatory and semi-submarine for travelers who prefer to stay dry.

Matching gear to each destination

Warm, calm water and surface-level snorkeling call for a full face mask in the family sizes. Open-water reef sites with current favor a tempered glass dive mask with a wide field of view, paired with a snorkel and fins that match your kick style. If your customers plan both trips in one year - and a great many do - a mask and snorkel set covers both water types in one purchase.
Trip tip: pack a spare silicone strap and a mesh bag. Boat decks claim more gear than the ocean does.
