Surface Interval Ideas: Making the Most of Off-Gassing Time
The surface interval is not dead time. Plan your off-gas hours well - kayaking, cooking classes, island walks - and the whole trip improves.

Every diving day has a rhythm: dive, surface interval, dive again. The interval is usually treated as waiting - a snack, a nap, a book on the boat deck. But hang those hours well and they quietly become the second half of the holiday: the kayak through a sea cave, the market cooking class, the island walk with a local guide. The trick is knowing what fits the window.
Why the interval exists
After a dive, your tissues carry extra dissolved nitrogen that must be released gradually. The surface interval lets that off-gassing happen while you rest, hydrate and rebuild warmth. It is also why flights and altitude come with no-fly windows: the body needs time above water before it can safely go higher.
Match the activity to the window
An hour between dives suits low-exertion fun: snorkel a shallow lagoon, swim, sketch, or explore the resort's coastline at knee depth. A multi-hour surface interval opens bigger options - kayaking a sheltered coast, visiting a fishing village, an early dinner in town. Whole off-gas afternoons (for repetitive dive schedules ending early) turn into the classic add-ons: whale watching from shore, national park walks, museum stops and cooking sessions.
Destinations that make intervals easy
The best diving destinations have life built in above the waterline. Gozo adds cliff walks and sea caves to its reef dives. The Maldives offers sandbank picnics and water sports between dives. Mexico's Yucatan pairs cenote diving with Mayan sites and tacos. And boats running liveaboard schedules generally structure the day so intervals land at sunset - which is its own kind of scheduling genius.
Small kit that improves off-gas hours
Keep a second bag ready for shore time: sun protection, a dry towel, water, and a compact mask and snorkel if the water tempts you again. Rinse and dry your dive gear during the interval - not later - so the evening is free. And if the interval involves boats or rough ground, move your mask into its case; the most common dive-gear casualty is a mask crushed in a beach bag between two perfectly good dives.
